Common Car Battery Problems and Fixes

Here’s a closer look at three of the most common car battery-related issues, their warning signs and how to fix them before they become bigger problems.

1. Loose or Corroded Terminals

Signs:

Slow or hard starts – The engine takes longer to crank or struggles to start.

Flickering lights – Headlights, dashboard lights, or interior lights dim or flicker unexpectedly.

Fix:

• Clean terminals with a mixture of baking soda and water using a wire brush to remove corrosion buildup.
• Tighten connections to ensure a secure fit.
• Apply petroleum jelly to the terminals to create a protective layer that slows down future corrosion.

2. Weak or Dead Battery

Signs:

Car won’t start – You hear a clicking sound or no sound at all when turning the key.

Frequent jump-starts – You need external help to get your vehicle running multiple times.

Fix:

• Jump-start the car and drive for at least 30 minutes to allow the alternator to recharge the battery.
• Test and replace the battery if it’s between 3–5 years old or fails a load test.
• Turn off lights and accessories before parking to prevent unnecessary power drain.

3. Faulty Alternator or Charging System

Signs:

Dim headlights while driving – The brightness fluctuates, especially when accelerating or braking.

Battery drains on the go – The battery loses charge even while the engine is running.

Fix:

• Test alternator output using a multimeter, it should read between 13.8V and 14.4V when the engine is running.
• Repair or replace the alternator, drive belts, or faulty wiring as needed.

Tip: Regular maintenance can prevent most battery-related breakdowns. Keep terminals clean, check your battery’s health at least once a year, and pay attention to unusual signs like dimming lights or slow starts.
